Collecting Black Sand

By Ken Finn on August 25, 2009

So, for years and years (forty?) we have told people visiting the Exploratorium that they could bring a magnet out to Ocean Beach and collect their very own Black Sand.  I know this can be done since one upon a time I was the Black Sand getter.  Rather than bring sand back to be dried, sorted, or whatever I would camp out at the beach for an hour or two and return with about 40lbs. of the stuff… all black, nothing else!

Recently, I called for all interested Exploraotrium Members to meet  me at Ocean Beach for a “Black Sand Treasure Hunt”.  Nearly thirty people showed up and we had a blast, exploring, gathering, refining and learning about geology, sand, and magnets.
